Qualified engineers produce the work

Our models and drawings are produced and reviewed by chartered and licensed engineers, including holders of PE (Texas), CPEng, MRICS and MCIOB. Deliverables include an engineering assessment of the design, not geometry alone.

Issues are referred back to the designer

Where a model exposes a detail that cannot be built as drawn, a tolerance conflict, or an element specified above the load case it serves, we raise it with the designer or engineer of record before the package progresses to detail stage.

Automation supports delivery volume

We use Revit API, C#, Python and Dynamo workflows to automate repetitive production and to run quality-control checks across the whole model on every issue rather than on a sample.

02The problem we address

The problem we address

Clash detection identifies where two objects occupy the same space. It does not identify whether a reinforcement arrangement can physically be placed, whether a service route leaves adequate tolerance against the structure, whether a connection detail will be accepted by the engineer of record, or whether a section has been specified above the load case it serves.

These are engineering assessments and require an engineer to make them. A model can be fully coordinated and still carry issues of this kind into construction, where they are usually raised as RFIs and settled as variations. Correction at that stage costs more and affects the programme.

Because our modellers are qualified engineers, issues of this kind are identified during modelling and referred back to the designer or engineer of record, in writing and with a proposed resolution, before the package progresses.

Working with contractors and EPCs

NOVSTA is an engineering-led delivery partner that prevents cost and programme risk before it reaches site, by staffing engineers rather than drafters and embedding commercial control within technical coordination.

You carry the delivery risk on a design issued by others and modelled by others. Where the two do not reconcile on site, the programme absorbs the delay and your commercial position is tested.

A detail that cannot be built as drawn will pass clash detection, because geometrically nothing intersects. It reaches shop drawing stage, then site, and is raised as an RFI. By the time it is resolved the sequence has moved and the entitlement position is harder to establish, because the record does not clearly show when the issue became knowable.

  • Engineering review rather than geometric checking

    Our modellers are qualified engineers and assess whether the resolution is buildable, not only whether the objects clear each other.

  • A written record of what was raised and when

    Design queries are issued to the designer or engineer of record, dated and with a proposed resolution. The register serves as a technical output and as a contemporaneous commercial record.

  • Value engineering on live packages

    Members of the team are designers, so we can propose an alternative arrangement, section or system rather than reporting that a budget has been exceeded.

  • Commercial capability on the same team

    Through NOVSTA PM, issues identified in coordination can be carried into change control, entitlement and cost forecasting under a single accountability line.

The technical scope between design intent and construction. Available as discrete packages or as an integrated design-to-delivery function.

01Structural design+

Structural analysis and verification, finite element modelling, formwork and layout drawings, reinforcement detailing, and value engineering of structural solutions. Concrete, steel and precast, including bridge and heavy civil structures.

Analysis and detailing are carried out by the same team, so the detail issued for construction reflects the assumptions in the analysis model rather than a drafted interpretation of them.

02MEP design+

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing design and modelling, calculation-backed sizing and routing, plant room coordination, and MEP shop drawings to installation standard.

Routing decisions are made by the engineers who sized the system, and are coordinated against the structure, access requirements and maintainability as a single exercise.

03BIM modelling and coordination+

Multi-discipline federated modelling, clash detection and resolution, constructability review, model auditing, and delivery to the client's information requirements and naming standards.

Each coordination decision is recorded with the engineering reasoning behind it, which allows the output to be used later as a change-control record as well as a technical one.

04Engineering automation+

Automation of repetitive modelling, detailing and scheduling work, and automated quality control run against the full model on every issue.

This allows a senior engineering team to carry package volumes that would otherwise require a much larger drafting operation, and means checking is exhaustive rather than sampled.

05Scan-to-BIM and reality capture+

Drone survey and laser scanning, point cloud registration and processing, conversion to verified as-built models, and deviation analysis against the design.

Deviations are assessed by engineers, so the output states not only where the built condition differs from the design but whether the difference is structurally or functionally significant.

06Technical office+

Design change management, quantity surveying and take-off, technical reporting and method statements, and quality assurance and compliance monitoring.

Run by engineers with commercial awareness, the technical office produces a contemporaneous record of what changed, when it became knowable and what it cost.

07Value engineering+

Structured review of structural and MEP packages to identify cost reduction that holds design intent, functional performance and compliance, delivered as costed options with the trade-offs stated.

Because the team includes designers, options take the form of alternative arrangements, sections, systems or sequences rather than removal of scope.

How we work

Most modelling suppliers differ in price and capacity. The differences below concern who carries out the work, what they are able to question, and what happens to what they find. Information delivery is managed in accordance with ISO 19650.

Engineers produce and review every deliverable

We do not operate a drafting floor under engineering supervision. Staffing this way costs more per hour and generally costs less per project.

Findings are issued before the package progresses

Queries are dated, documented and accompanied by a proposed resolution. Modelling around a known problem defers the cost rather than removing it.

Quality control is automated and applied in full

Routines check naming, parameters, geometry integrity and level of information need across the whole model on every issue.

Technical findings connect to commercial control

Through NOVSTA PM, issues identified in coordination can be carried into change control and cost forecasting without a handover between suppliers.
